The German Foreign Minister did not follow the routine and made disrespectful remarks in front of Foreign Minister Wang Yi. The Chinese side responded on the spot
On December 2-3, 2024, German Foreign Minister Belberg arrived in Beijing, marking her second visit after 20 months.
This visit was supposed to be a routine dialogue between China and Germany in the fields of diplomacy and security. The outside world also believed that Germany chose to visit China at this time to seek some opportunities for cooperation, but the final result surprised the outside world.
Because during the talks, due to the German Foreign Minister mentioning two topics, the media were excluded from the talks. So, what exactly happened at that time?
picture
From December 2nd to 3rd, German Foreign Minister Belberg's trip to Beijing was not just a diplomatic exchange.
This visit comes at a time of domestic political turmoil in Germany, with the government's vote of confidence approaching. The role of Berlbock in the seventh round of the China Germany Diplomatic and security Strategic Dialogue is particularly important.
She is not only a member of the German Green Party, but also one of the key figures who may become the German Chancellor in the future.
Her purpose for this trip is multifaceted, and one significant goal is to use this opportunity to increase the support for the Green Party and gain a favorable position in the upcoming elections.
picture
Belburke's visit to China was ostensibly intended to resolve economic disputes and security issues in Sino German relations, but her two major issues were more likely to show her image of "tough diplomacy" at home and abroad.
Especially when Germany is facing the game of tariffs on electric vehicles with the EU, her position has become particularly sensitive.
Ukraine issue: Belbak's tough rhetoric sparks controversy
In his meeting with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, Berk spared no effort to emphasize China's role in the Ukraine conflict, publicly accusing China of providing weapons to Russia and viewing this behavior as a threat to European peace.
In response to this, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian stated that China firmly opposes unfounded accusations and emphasizes that China's consistent position is to promote peace negotiations rather than participate in conflicts.
For Germany, the Ukraine issue has always been a diplomatic sensitive point, and as the leader of the Green Party, Berbourg attempted to establish a "tough diplomacy" image among domestic voters by criticizing our country's stance.
Some comments suggest that her approach is more driven by domestic political considerations rather than a desire to reach a consensus with our country.
In fact, on the issue between Russia and Ukraine, our country has always been committed to persuading peace and promoting talks, and Berk's words are undoubtedly covering up this fact
Electric Vehicle Tariff Dispute: Germany's Dilemma and China's Position
Another controversial issue is the issue of anti subsidy for electric vehicles.
The EU passed a proposal in October 2024 to impose countervailing tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles, and Germany, as one of the EU member states, has consistently taken the wrong stance on this issue.
Bellberg believes that "China's support for car companies' 'low price dumping' violates international trade rules and harms Germany's industrial interests.
But in reality, the EU's increase in taxes on electric vehicles from China is harming both itself and others.
China's response to this issue directly points to the EU's tariff policy, believing that this practice violates the principles of free trade and fair competition.
The Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs clearly stated during the talks that the EU's imposition of tariffs on electric vehicles will undermine the fairness of global trade, and called on both sides to resolve their differences through negotiations.
Although Germany holds an important economic position within the EU, its stance on this issue is difficult to influence the overall policies of the EU.
picture
Another purpose of Bellberg's visit is obviously to promote Germany's voice in the European Union through negotiations with our country, especially in the face of increasingly severe trade disputes and global economic pressures. Germany hopes to redefine the mode of cooperation with our country.
However, despite Germany's high dependence on the Chinese market, it has not fully demonstrated its leadership role on this issue, which has limited Germany's influence in China Europe relations to some extent.
The response from the Chinese side is very clear
Although Belberg's visit was carried out in the context of the Russia-Ukraine conflict and the EU's tax increase on Chinese electric vehicles, some people felt that Germany did not rule out the possibility of seeking cooperation.
In response to this, the editor summarized three responses from Foreign Minister Wang Yi:
There are differences and disagreements between China and Germany, but these differences should not be obstacles to cooperation, and disagreements should not be reasons for confrontation. The positive achievements and beneficial experiences in China Germany relations so far are worth cherishing and inheriting by both sides.
This sentence actually makes it very clear that it's okay to have differences of opinion, but we need to be able to continue the conversation. We can't ignore the achievements of our cooperation for many years just because of this small matter, and hit the stick to death. We hope everyone cherishes it together.
To maintain stable development of Sino German relations, the first step is to correct strategic awareness.
China Germany relations are not targeted towards third parties, nor should they be influenced by third parties.
It's also quite clear here that everyone knows who this third-party editor is.
As for whether Bell Burke was affected or not, we dare not say without evidence, but the political and media circles in Germany should have a clearer judgment.
The EU's high anti subsidy tax on Chinese electric vehicles violates the principles of fair competition and free trade, and has become a prominent issue between China and Europe.
We hope that the German and European sides will objectively and rationally view China's development, adopt a proactive and pragmatic policy towards China, and resolve trade disputes through dialogue and negotiation.
This is a response to the EU tax increase bill, expressing both our position and our demands.
Because we only want a fair market environment, we are also quite proactive in this matter and hope to resolve it through dialogue and communication.
But at the same time, it also emphasizes one thing: the EU should stop playing tricks of saying one thing on the surface and doing another behind the scenes. If it becomes too difficult to talk about, everyone will not look good.
And then, Germany is also a big brother in the EU, so no matter how you say it, you have to play a leading or active role.
After listening to all of this, I don't know if it fits Bell Burke's overseas mission. I quickly stated that Germany supports negotiations and strives to find a solution that is acceptable to both sides.
picture
It is worth mentioning that the interaction between China and Germany in public has always been relatively transparent in the past, but this time they chose to clean up the media present.
This measure is also considered by the external media as a manifestation of China's dissatisfaction with some radical remarks made by Bell Burke, and also reflects China's bottom line in handling diplomatic affairs.
In the past, China and Germany have maintained a relatively friendly relationship in economic cooperation and international affairs. However, with changes in the international situation, especially the Ukraine issue and the dispute over electric vehicle tariffs, the two countries may inevitably become more complicated when dealing with certain matters.
This measure by the Chinese side is not only a counterattack against Germany's tough rhetoric, but also sends a signal to the outside world:
Even though we usually have good relationships, when it comes to bottom lines such as national sovereignty and core interests, we will never tolerate unfounded accusations and external interference.
And for this result, German media all exclaimed: this may be her last visit to China.
picture
According to the German newspaper "Handelsblatt", the dialogue between the Chinese and German foreign ministers lasted for nearly 3 and a half hours,
Bellberg believes that discussions, including important issues, are "clear in content and friendly in tone".
Some comments suggest that she has provoked the Ukraine issue and the dispute over electric vehicle tariffs, attempting to demonstrate her "tough diplomatic stance" in public and prepare for domestic elections.
But at the same time, she also didn't forget the task she was carrying.
However, whether this strategy can meet her wishes may only be determined by time.
