Pengpai News senior reporter Zhu Yiyi
Until being contacted by the police, Harvard University student Zhou Yu (pseudonym) gradually realized that his faith in integrity had become a tool for others to accumulate wealth.
Recently, the Huangpu police in Shanghai have cracked two cases of fraud committed through online superstition through meticulous investigation, involving a total amount of over 1.3 million yuan. Among the victims, there are many highly educated individuals who believe that so-called "masters" can transport, restore love, and solve work problems by buying ornaments and beads. They often spend tens of thousands of yuan to purchase "magic tools".
The reporter from Pengpai News learned from the police that one group used all the money used by "believers" for worship to squander money, buying gold, celestial beads, and even real estate. In this case, the average age of the victim is around 35 years old, and all of them have a bachelor's degree or above.
Star chasers spend over 300000 yuan to pray for the stars and bring good luck to themselves
Miss Li, who is in her early thirties this year, has a high degree and loves chasing stars in her daily life, just like many peers. In 2021, she came into contact with an online store selling bracelets and ornaments in a fan group. The store owner, Jiang, was enthusiastic about communicating with her and revealed that she had obtained a true biography of a certain "master" with special abilities that could help with transportation.
In the following period of time, Miss Li was gradually deceived by the sweet words of Jiang and her team members. In addition to praying for her favorite star, she often confided in Jiang and others for comfort due to family and academic issues.
Under a series of seductive and provocative language from the other party, Miss Li developed trust in Jiang and others, and under their guidance, she gradually began to purchase beads and ornaments as a means of boosting her luck. Even after her personal efforts to get into a prestigious school, she was promoted by Jiang and others as advertisements to attract business.
In order to deepen their ideological control over Miss Li, Jiang and others fabricated lies to intimidate the parties involved, claiming that if they did not continue to consume, bad luck would occur, which would be detrimental to their own and their family's health. within three years, Miss Li spent over 300000 yuan under the influence of Jiang and others.

In January of this year, the Criminal Investigation Detachment of Huangpu Public security Bureau conducted in-depth analysis of case resources and uncovered hidden criminal clues. They discovered a fraud gang set up by Zhang, Jiang, and others. They used methods such as Weibo drainage, editing scripts, maintaining customer service, and forming groups to instill superstitious ideas in three social groups for a long time. They also boasted about their magical power to "believers" and lured them to spend huge amounts of money to purchase bracelets, ornaments, and other items. The amount involved in the case reached more than 1.2 million yuan.
At the same time, the police have established a special task force to actively carry out work such as searching for victims, collecting fixed evidence, and personnel verification and landing.
At first, some victims were even "deeply trapped" and unwilling to trust the police. It wasn't until more and more victims gathered and exchanged their experiences of victimization that they gradually realized the fact that they had fallen into a trap.
Harvard PhD students were scammed out of money and even made PPTs for criminal gangs
Similarly, Zhou Yu (pseudonym), a woman who is pursuing a doctoral degree at Harvard University, was also deceived. After meeting Jiang in 2015, she has always believed in the so-called "venerable". In addition to being defrauded of a large amount of money, she also wrote copy scripts and made PPTs for online platforms used by criminal gangs in her spare time.

Until being contacted by the police, Zhou Yu gradually realized that his faith in integrity had become a tool for others to accumulate wealth. He recalled his experience of being deceived, "Because in school, everyone he met was a gentleman, and he would also treat scammers as gentlemen. He would think that what others said so sincerely must be true. He didn't know that the lower limit of a person would be so low, and he didn't have a full understanding of human nature," Zhou Yu told the police.
Another woman who was deceived, Xiao Zhu (pseudonym), told the reporter about the whole process of falling into a trap. Originally, she was only interested in some religious knowledge. During the process of searching and browsing on Weibo, she came across a netizen named "Mingle's Void" who had a lot of religious knowledge on his Weibo account, and then began to contact for advice.

The so-called "Venerable" WeChat official account
In 2022, this netizen told her that she had been taken in as a disciple by a master and transformed into an "Venerable". She also pulled her into a WeChat group, where there were hundreds of people who enthusiastically shared stories of good luck after purchasing Venerable products every day. Watching Xiao Zhu every day, she began to believe in her.
In 2023, due to work difficulties, Xiaozhu, who was very anxious, decided to go to Guangzhou to relax and personally pay a visit to the "Venerable". "At that time, he found that there was a Buddhist temple at the Venerable's home, and the Venerable gave a strange feeling. He was not very old, wearing gold and silver, and was constantly promoting various products when he met. At that time, he felt dizzy." Due to his own anxiety and the atmosphere, Xiaozhu spent 40000 yuan to buy some "magical tools" that day, and as of the incident, he was deceived for more than 100000 yuan. ".
In order to strengthen the beliefs of the victims and implement "brainwashing", Jiang will also require fans in the group to recite their written scriptures 10000 times a day, curse some victims who suspect them, and claim that these people will have retribution and be "backfired".
On March 20, 2024, the Huangpu police organized police forces to rush to Gansu Province and Guangdong Province to simultaneously carry out a centralized network collection operation. With the assistance of the local police, they successfully arrested five members of the fraud gang, including Zhang Moulin, and seized important evidence such as the involved mobile phone and accounts, and dismantled the entire chain of the fraud gang.
At present, five people, including suspect Zhang Moulin, have been taken criminal coercive measures by Huangpu police according to law for suspected fraud, and the case is under further investigation.
The woman hired someone to "do it" to recover her boyfriend's loan
Young woman Cai self studied so-called "astrology" knowledge online, and then left messages everywhere on popular short video platforms claiming that it can help improve her personal fortune. During this time, Cai met Miss Xu through the internet and added each other as social media friends.
At first, Cai charged Xiao Xu a reward ranging from 200 to 300 yuan based on personal fortune and other reasons. In September 2023, due to emotional issues and a desire to change her fortune, Miss Xu contacted Cai and requested to purchase a pendant with a "special" effect. Cai then purchased a regular pendant online for 960 yuan and sold it to Miss Xu for 17980 yuan.
Unfortunately, Miss Xu broke up with her boyfriend soon after due to trivial matters. However, she felt unwilling and hoped that Cai could find a way to salvage the situation. Cai told Miss Xu that she could achieve her wish through a special way and threatened the victim that if she agreed and then withdrew, her body would be harmed.
Xiao Xu believed it to be true and transferred 68000 yuan to Cai. In fact, Cai did not have any special abilities, but downloaded some related videos from the internet to deceive and send them to Miss Xu.
Later, Xiaoxu and his current boyfriend had emotional problems again and contacted the "wizard" Cai. Cai searched for relevant information online and then used the pretext of transportation to deceive Xiaoxu into earning 38000 yuan.
During this period, Xiaoxu was once unwilling to pay the fee due to his inability to do so, but Cai kept instilling in him the danger of canceling the "practice" halfway through. Xiaoxu then borrowed a large amount of money online, and later sought help from his parents due to his inability to repay the online loan, leading to the incident.
In January 2024, Xiaoxu, accompanied by his parents, reported to the public security organs. After receiving the report, the Huangpu police immediately carried out investigation. After careful analysis, they finally locked down the suspect Cai, and organized the police to capture Cai in Jiaxing, Zhejiang.
At present, the suspect Cai has been detained by the Huangpu police in accordance with the law for suspected fraud, and the case is under further investigation.
