Recently, it was rumored online that a man who applied for a graduate degree in the School of Physics at Nanjing University, despite ranking first in professional courses, was still rejected due to his suspected failure in ideological and moral assessment.
According to the Xiaoxiang Morning Post, several netizens had previously posted on online platforms, reporting to the school that the student had serious quality problems: he had recorded videos of killing cats in the school dormitory and also joined an online gang that enjoyed cat abuse.
In the relevant public announcement list, the school noted "failed the interview" after its name, and the reporter learned from the relevant departments of Nanjing University that the information transmitted online is true. When asked by reporters if the interview was considering the cat abuse incident, the school responded, "These behaviors may all have an impact."
From current media reports, it is difficult for people to see the full picture of the incident, and the school's response to why the student was rejected in the interview is not particularly clear. Therefore, in the face of public opinion heat, the universities involved may want to explain more clearly the specific reasons for the student's failure in the interview, in response to public speculation.
This candidate's exam results are indeed excellent. according to the information disclosed by the school, the man ranked first in the particle physics and nuclear physics major in this exam. But in media reports, his cat abuse behavior is also very cruel. He killed cats in school dormitories and even recorded videos to upload to the internet.
In this context, if schools really dismiss cats for abusing them, there is actually a basis. The "2024 National Master's Graduate Enrollment management Regulations" issued by the Ministry of Education includes a special chapter on "Assessment of Ideological and Political Quality and Moral Character"; The "2024 Master's Candidate Recruitment Work Rules" of Nanjing University also includes "those who fail the ideological and moral assessment will not be admitted.".
Cat abuse behavior is certainly a form of ideological and moral misconduct, and if the student is really criticized for it, it can be fully understood. In September 2023, a student from Nanyang Institute of Technology in Henan Province was directly expelled for abusing cats; In 2020, Shandong University of Technology also expelled a student who abused cats.
All of these indicate that the education community has gradually formed a consensus on the behavior of cat abuse among college students, adopting a more distinct attitude towards behavior that disregards life.
Many universities have always attached great importance to the moral qualities of students who take the postgraduate entrance examination, and this behavior of the school also sends a signal to college students: learning is not just about burying oneself in books. The most basic values of kindness and respect for life are also compulsory courses. Learning is not just about acquiring a tool like ability, but also about shaping one's personality. College students should have a deeper understanding of this.
Of course, the education system should also reflect on this. In recent years, it has not been uncommon for college students to abuse animals, including some from prestigious universities. Some even participate in underground animal abuse organizations and make profits through this method. These are all reminders that life education should indeed be strengthened.
At this year's National People's Congress and Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, a representative of the National People's Congress suggested strengthening the awareness of young people about the origin of life, how to implement self-protection, and how to respect and respect the lives of themselves and others. The theme of "life care" education should be implemented as soon as possible in the development of school-based curriculum in schools. similar opinions have become a social hot topic in recent years.
From the perspective of cultivating virtue and nurturing people, punishing students who abuse animals is not the end in itself, but rather a form of punishment. And how to make students truly learn to respect life, love animals, and improve this frequent evil behavior as a whole in educational content is a more profound and profound issue.
Another noteworthy point is that although Nanjing University has announced that the candidate did not pass the exam, from the public opinion on social media, some netizens clearly did not intend to let him go and even put pressure on the school suspected of being transferred, as if to completely block him out of the university.
Cat abuse is indeed infuriating, but it is not an unforgivable crime. This student was once interviewed by the public security organs, and the punishment was only to write a letter of repentance, promising that similar situations would not happen again. This indicates that under current laws, the severity of such behavior is not yet sufficient for public security punishment, let alone imprisonment.
So if because of this behavior, this student is being tracked for a long time and completely deprived of the right to higher education, which is equivalent to leaving a "record" for others outside of the law, is this punishment too appropriate? Is it possible for him to make up for this mistake in some way?
These are actually serious topics that need to be taken seriously by all parties. After all, if a person's rights are deprived solely due to the anger of public opinion, there is also a logical problem. Therefore, more continuous discussion is needed on how to provide a clearer definition at the legal level. The top ranked students in professional courses who were rejected in the postgraduate entrance examination interview also require the universities involved to provide more effective information to the public.
