他来自河南农村，小学毕业，在清华大学的一家餐厅当厨师、做凉菜。

他也是一名画家，是中国美术家协会会员。他的绘画作品被外交部永久收藏，在联合国教科文组织总部展出。

离清华园不远的5平方米住处兼画室，容得下“厨房画家”刘涛三十多年的热爱。画家不问出处，刘涛却总以家乡的土作画，那是他从不曾忘记的、出发的地方。

眼前的菜，也是一幅画。刘涛能成为清华的一名厨师，“会画画”是他的核心竞争力。白天，他在清华大学甲所餐厅，出品一道道凉菜；工作以外的时间，刘涛几乎都在“画室”里度过。

这间画室也是他的住处，离清华不远，但举着导航也不好找，要扎进一片半世纪前建成的平房，再穿过胡同几道弯才能到达。老旧的木头房门难以挡住严冬的风，除了木板搭起的单人床和堆满颜料、调色盘、手稿、书本的书架，剩下可挪动的空间只有两平方米。这是标准的“陋室”，却装得下刘涛三十多年的热爱。

“厨房画家”住的地方

大概是上二年级时，刘涛偶然看到书本上的一幅插图，觉得“画画很好玩”。自此，他开始“画书”，临摹各种书本上的插图。过年时，村里放鞭炮，他就临摹鞭炮包装纸上的图案；拿到大人的空烟盒，他也能画半天。

在河南老家，全校、全村人都知道这个叫刘涛的小孩爱画画。到了五年级，老师将画黑板报的任务交给刘涛。接下来，他没能拥有更大的画板。穷困的家庭不仅无力帮他实现“艺术梦”，甚至连读书也承担不起。小学毕业后，刘涛开始跟着亲戚学厨，家人觉得，在厨房干活，至少有口饭吃。

16岁起，刘涛在河南商丘、洛阳、郑州等地辗转近20家酒店。飘泊的日子里，他画画的念头仿佛生了根。无论工作多累，脱下厨师服，刘涛要摸到画笔，心里才踏实。头一个月工资130元，刘涛往家里寄了60元，自己预留了5元零花钱，剩下的钱都用来买书、笔和纸。

2004年，刘涛打工的地图延伸到了北京，他成了北京航空航天大学的厨师。闲暇时，刘涛慕名去了潘家园旧货市场，看到了齐白石、吴冠中、梵高的画，他尤其喜欢吴冠中的《小鸟天堂》和《狮子林》。新世界的门打开了。

此时23岁的刘涛已经使劲画了十多年。吴冠中的好，梵高的好，对刘涛是震撼，也是启发——这样的“好”，怎么能变成自己的好？

他想起小时候每年农历二月二至三月三，母亲赶庙会回来时带的泥泥狗，母亲说能给他消灾除病。这种河南周口淮阳太昊陵庙会特产的泥塑，以当地特有的泥土捏成各类动物形状，黑色铺底，明艳的绿、黄、红、白四色彩绘点线和各种符号铺满全身。

母亲没能让刘涛继续上学，却留给他充沛的爱和灵感。儿时的玩具成为刘涛绘画风格的基石。刘涛开始用家乡的胶泥为颜料，以白毛巾为画纸，勾勒出黑色的线条，着上五彩的颜色。

2009年，一扇更大的门在刘涛眼前打开。经朋友推荐，他的作品被北航艺术馆创始馆长蔡劲松看到了。震撼之余，蔡劲松很快为刘涛办了个人画展，一百多幅作品，大部分都是毛巾上作的画。“线描彩绘”，刘涛高兴地说，自己的风格终于有名字了。

“北航小厨师办个人画展”上了报纸，刘涛半只脚踏进了画家圈。他依旧孜孜不倦地画画，也有了更多机会认识专业人士、获得新知。

一次画展中，他偶然看到清华大学美术学院教授杜大恺的作品。画得真好啊！他想，如果能跟着杜教授学画画该多好？他对杜大恺任教的清华大学美术学院书画研修班心向往之，但他又觉得“清华大学”这几个字好像离自己太远了。

最终，刘涛鼓起勇气，按流程提交了五六幅作品。2016年8月，他收到了研修班的入学通知书。35岁这一年，从未接受过科班训练的刘涛终于有机会系统地学习绘画。

初到清华大学的教室，同学们聊国外画家聊得热闹，刘涛在一旁又是自卑，又是激动：“我两眼发光，我说我不知道，然后就听他们讲，确实学到很多东西”。他如愿成了杜大恺的学生，去威海写生，画海草房。慢慢地，他知道怎么调色、怎么构图，也会设计人物了。

每节课、每分钟，刘涛珍而重之；用泥土作画的手艺，他也从没丢掉。每回一次老家，他便挖上几十斤家乡土，背到北京。隔几个月，土用完了，又是回家的时候。他享受家乡的土紧贴脊背的凉意，更享受乡愁化为一幅幅作品的过程。

独特的画风、高产的作品……到清华后，刘涛参展的机会变多了。2017年，刘涛的作品《五色土和符号》受邀参加第七届中国北京国际美术双年展。也是这幅画，在联合国教科文组织总部展出，被外交部永久收藏。这是一个意外而巨大的鼓励，就像捅破了最后一层窗户纸，刘涛觉得，画画这件事有了水到渠成的感觉。

2019年对刘涛来说是个重要的年份。因为有更多作品陆续入选国内外重要展览，他以惊人的速度攒够了积分，在这一年成为中国美术家协会会员。这一年，延续他独特的绘画风格，刘涛的第一本绘本作品《仓颉大叔和汉字的奇妙故事》出版了。

也是在2019年，刘涛作为厨师的职业生涯得到延续。在研修班的学习告一段落，这时，他在清华大学接待服务中心谋得一个厨师的岗位：“厨师长说我们这儿不招人，我说我在清华美院学习画画的。他说那可以，我们就缺这样的一位厨师。”就这样，刘涛成了清华大学甲所餐厅的凉菜师傅。

刘涛做凉菜，和画画一样不惜力。他端出来的菜里，有清华的建筑、景观、文化，遇到主题宴会，他更是绞尽脑汁：“一桌菜有时候我晚上构思到一两点，先画草图，画完草图以后才能把它呈现出来。用什么菜，叫什么名字，画清华哪个景点，菜用什么原料，怎么呈现它的形。”

在哪里做菜不行，非得在清华？刘涛当然也有私心。做菜和画画，学校厨房和5平方米住所，两点一线的生活里，他偶尔还会拐个弯，去清华美院请教专业问题。

天天画画，无聊吗？刘涛觉得，“太有意思了”：“在绘画这个空间里很幸福。我感觉我画画一直都有灵感，什么都可以融到画里面去。跟画画有关系的，我都感兴趣、都喜欢。”

上班时总站着做菜，回到家，刘涛也总站着作画。身材精瘦的他好像从不觉得疲累，厨师、画家，两个身份都给他以成就感和快乐。

除了怎么也画不厌的画，刘涛还有许多做菜的创意没来得及实践，几十本绘本的创作也远不是终点。这间住了8年的屋子里，贴着他手抄的《劝学诗》，“三更灯火五更鸡，正是男儿读书时”。

“这首诗很激励我。一定要做自己喜欢的事情，不然等自己老了就晚了。每次感觉有点疲惫的时候，一看到这首诗立马就感觉有精神了，去支撑自己。”刘涛说。

The dish in front of me is also a painting. Liu Tao can become a chef at Tsinghua University, "painting" is his core competitiveness. During the day, he serves cold dishes at the Jia Suo restaurant of Tsinghua University. Outside of work, Liu Tao spends almost all his time in the "studio".

This studio is also his residence, not far from Tsinghua University, but it is difficult to find with a navigation, you have to dive into a one-story house built half a century ago, and then through several corners of the alley to reach. The old wooden door is hardly shielded from the harsh winter wind, and there is only two square meters of movable space, except for the wooden single bed and the shelves filled with paints, palettes, manuscripts and books. This is a standard "shabby room", but it can hold Liu Tao's love for more than 30 years.

When Liu Tao was in grade two, he happened to see an illustration on a book and thought "drawing is fun." Since then, he began to "draw books", copying the illustrations on various books. During the New Year, the village set off firecrackers, he copied the pattern on the wrapping paper of firecrackers; He could draw an adult's empty cigarette case.

In his hometown in Henan Province, the whole school and the whole village know that the child named Liu Tao loves painting. In the fifth grade, the teacher gave Liu Tao the task of drawing blackboard newspaper. Next, he didn't have a bigger drawing board. His poor family was not only unable to help him realize his "artistic dream", but also could not afford to study. After graduating from primary school, Liu Tao began to learn to cook with relatives, and the family felt that working in the kitchen, at least have a mouth to eat.

Since the age of 16, Liu Tao has worked in nearly 20 hotels in Shangqiu, Luoyang and Zhengzhou, Henan Province. The idea of painting seemed to take root in his wandering days. No matter how tired the work, take off the chef's clothes, Liu Tao must touch the paintbrush, the heart is at ease. Of his first monthly salary of 130 yuan, Liu Tao sent 60 yuan to his family, kept 5 yuan for pocket money, and used the rest to buy books, pens and paper.

In 2004, Liu Tao's map extended to Beijing, where he became a chef at Beihang University. In his spare time, Liu Tao went to the garage market in Panjiayuan and saw paintings by Qi Baishi, Wu Guanzhong and Van Gogh. He especially liked Wu Guanzhong's Birds Paradise and Lion Forest. He remembered that when he was a child, from February 2 to March 3 of the lunar calendar, his mother brought the mud dog back from the temple fair, and his mother said that he could eliminate disasters and diseases. His mother could not keep Liu Tao in school, but she left him with plenty of love and inspiration. Childhood toys became the cornerstone of Liu Tao's painting style. Liu Tao began to use the clay of his hometown as paint, and white towels as drawing paper, sketching black lines and adding multicolored colors.

In 2009, an even bigger door opened before Liu Tao's eyes. Recommended by friends, his works were seen by CAI Jinsong, the founding director of the Beihang Art Museum. Shocked, CAI Jinsong soon held a personal exhibition for Liu Tao, more than 100 works, most of them are painted on towels. "Line painting", Liu Tao said happily, his style finally has a name.

In an exhibition, he happened to see the works of Du Dakai, a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts of Tsinghua University. What a nice drawing! Would it be great, he thought, if he could learn to paint with Professor Du? He yearned for the painting and calligraphy workshop of the Academy of Fine Arts of Tsinghua University taught by Du Dakai, but he felt that the words "Tsinghua University" seemed too far away from him.

Finally, Liu Tao summoned up the courage to submit five or six works according to the process. In August 2016, he received an admission letter for the workshop. At the age of 35, Liu Tao, who had never received any class training, finally had the opportunity to learn painting systematically.

At the beginning of the classroom at Tsinghua University, the students talked about foreign painters, Liu Tao was on the side of inferiority, but also excited: "My eyes glow, I said I don't know, and then listen to them, really learn a lot of things." Every class, every minute, Liu Tao precious and important; He never lost the art of painting with clay. Every time he went back to his hometown, he dug up dozens of catties and carried them to Beijing. Every few months, the soil runs out and it's time to go home again. He enjoys the cool feeling of the soil of his hometown close to his back, and also enjoys the process of turning homesickness into a piece of work.

Unique painting style, high-yield works... After arriving at Tsinghua University, Liu Tao had more opportunities to participate in the exhibition. In 2017, Liu Tao's work "Five Colors of Earth and Symbols" was invited to participate in the 7th China Beijing International Art Biennale.
