Original title: What are the impacts of Taiwan's earthquake semiconductor factories? response from TSMC, Liandian, etc

On April 3, many earthquakes occurred in Hualien County, Taiwan, with the maximum magnitude of 7.3. Taiwan is a major global semiconductor manufacturing hub, and some semiconductor factories located in Taiwan have responded to the impact of the earthquake.

Among them, TSMC replied to reporters that some factory areas have been evacuated, while some of Liandian's machines have shut down, and Lianhua Electronics has suspended the operation of some factory machinery and equipment. Qunlian Electronics replied to reporters that the cooperative processing plant is still conducting inventory to confirm the impact of the earthquake. There are also earthquakes in some parts of Japan, and Kaixia replied to reporters that there is no relevant news about the impact of the earthquake. As of the time of publication, Taiwan's TSMC fell 1.27%.

Taipei also experienced significant tremors

"The car was shaking left and right while driving. At first, I thought it might be a problem with the track, but the train shook for about 20 seconds before the carriage came to a stop." Xiao Zheng told a reporter from First financial that he was in Taipei and had planned to take the subway to Taipei railway station for a trip, but unexpectedly encountered an earthquake on the subway. When the earthquake occurred, the Wenhu Line subway he was riding was running on an elevated bridge.

Due to temporary parking, Xiaozheng and other passengers were stranded in the middle of two subway stations. The air conditioning in his carriage was cut off for a while before resuming supply. He learned from the broadcast that due to the impact of the earthquake, the subway line was temporarily suspended and safety checks were being carried out. After a temporary stop of about 40 minutes between two stations, the Wenhu Line subway decided to stop the train at the nearest platform and evacuated all passengers. He told reporters that since Taipei is not located at the epicenter and most passengers were unaware of such a strong earthquake when the subway stopped, the emotions of the passengers in the carriage were relatively calm.

"I took the subway from school to Taipei Station, but upon arriving at the station, I found that both the high-speed rail and the railway were affected and either delayed or suspended. Helpless, Xiao Zheng chose to refund his ticket.". Fortunately, public transportation in Taipei is currently operating normally, except for the subway. It is understood that in order to eliminate potential safety hazards caused by the earthquake, all subway lines in Taipei area were suspended after the earthquake occurred.

Xiaozheng learned that his friend was at Hualien Railway Station and wanted to return to Taipei, but all trains had been cancelled. His friend was still trying to find a solution, and his friend's network seemed to be not very good after the earthquake. according to local media reports, power transmission was interrupted due to the earthquake, affecting a total of 172 base stations of major telecommunications operators in Taiwan, mainly located in Hualien, Yilan, and New Taipei. It is expected to be repaired today.

Multiple semiconductor manufacturers responded

The earthquake has had a certain impact on the travel and communication of Taiwanese people, and semiconductor factories located in multiple parts of Taiwan are also evaluating the impact of the earthquake.

In a wafer foundry, semiconductor foundry giant TSMC responded to a reporter from First Financial News that there were several earthquakes in Taiwan this morning, and the work safety system was normal. To ensure personnel safety, relevant preventive measures were implemented according to the company's internal procedures. Some factories have been evacuated, and personnel are now safe and are gradually returning to their work positions. The detailed situation is yet to be confirmed. In addition, the preliminary inspection of the construction site of TSMC is normal. Due to safety considerations, it has been decided to suspend work at various construction sites in Taiwan today. Construction can only proceed after the inspection.

Wafer foundry Liandian responded that some of the machines have been shut down, and engineering personnel are working hard to inventory and restore them. Personnel from Zhuke and Nanke have been evacuated according to operating standards, and all personnel are safe. The factory facilities are normal. Lianhua Electronics responded that the company has suspended the operation of mechanical equipment in some factories and evacuated some facilities in Hsinchu and Tainan Center. Li Jidian responded that it is still under evaluation.

In addition, the production line of HDI process giant Yaohua located in Lize, Yilan was slightly affected this morning. Yaohua pointed out that the earthquake did not cause significant damage, and the production line is currently suspended for proper inspection. It is expected to resume work before noon.

It is reported that Taichung City and various industrial parks in China have measured a magnitude of 4.

In terms of storage, memory manufacturer Huabang Electric stated that personnel are currently safe and factory facilities are operating normally. The actual impact is currently being evaluated. Storage manufacturer Nanya Technology stated that personnel have confirmed safety, and some machines have been shut down for preventive purposes. Currently, safety checks are being conducted. Micron stated that the company is evaluating its business operations and supply chain, and all employees are safe.

The person in charge of Qunlian Electronics, a storage control chip design manufacturer, told First Financial reporters that the cooperating processing plants are still undergoing inventory confirmation and it is currently unknown whether production has been affected.

On April 2nd, a 6.1 magnitude earthquake also occurred in the coastal area of Iwate Prefecture, Japan. According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, around 8:58 am on April 3rd, an earthquake with a maximum observed magnitude of 4 occurred near Okinawa Prefecture and Nago Island. Japan is also one of the main producers of storage chips.

Regarding whether the factory located in Japan has been affected by the earthquake, the person in charge of Armor Xia told First Financial reporters that there is currently no news.

The earthquake also affected leading panel companies Youda and Qunchuang. Currently, Youda and Qunchuang are undergoing equipment maintenance and are expected to resume operation in the afternoon or evening of the same day.

Global semiconductor manufacturing hub

Taiwan is located on the Pacific Rim seismic belt, with frequent earthquakes. At the same time, Taiwan is also a major global semiconductor manufacturing hub, accounting for about 46% of the production capacity of foundries last year. Precision semiconductor manufacturing requires extremely high production stability, and unexpected events such as water and power outages caused by earthquakes may have an impact on semiconductor manufacturing.

According to the statistics of Jibang Consulting, in 2023, Taiwan will account for about 46% of the wafer foundry capacity, followed by 26% of Chinese Mainland, 12% of South Korea, 6% of the United States, and 2% of Japan. Taiwan will account for 68% of the global advanced process capacity, and 80% of the EUV generation (such as 7nm and more advanced processes).

From the perspective of revenue ranking, according to statistics from Jibang Consulting, the top five global wafer foundries in the fourth quarter of 2023 were TSMC, Samsung, Gexin, Liandian, and SMIC. Among the top ten companies, TSMC, UMC, Powerchip, and World Advanced are all Taiwanese companies. The first place TSMC has a market share of 61.2%, far exceeding the second place Samsung's market share of 11.3%.

At present, many leading consumer electronics and AI server manufacturers rely on TSMC's production capacity for their high process chips. For example, TSMC is a supplier of Apple chips and a contract manufacturer of AI chips such as NVIDIA H100. NVIDIA GPUs need to be packaged together with HBM (High Bandwidth Memory) and also rely on TSMC's packaging technology.

The earthquake occurred in the sea area of Hualien County, Hualien County, which is located in the east of the island. According to the measurement of Taiwan's meteorological department, a magnitude 7.2 earthquake occurred at 7:58 on the 3rd, with the epicenter located 25 kilometers south east of the Hualien County government (in the eastern waters of Taiwan).

From the impact of previous earthquakes, a 6.4 magnitude earthquake occurred in the Hualien area of eastern Taiwan in 2022. At that time, Jibang Consulting conducted a preliminary investigation and stated that the wafer foundry and storage chip DRAM factories were mostly concentrated in the north and central regions, and the actual impact of each factory was limited. Wafer foundries TSMC, UMC, and TSMC, as well as world-class locations, were mainly concentrated in Hsinchu, Taichung, and Tainan. At that time, the seismic intensity was within 3 levels and did not cause any downtime.

Earlier, the Taiwan earthquake had a significant impact on semiconductor manufacturing. In the 1999 921 earthquake, production in the TSMC power plant area was interrupted, and at that time, the power supply in Taiwan's semiconductor park could not be restored to normal for a short period of time. Some wafer factories took about a week to resume production. Subsequently, semiconductor factories such as TSMC enhanced their seismic resistance. The reporter saw on TSMC's official website that since experiencing the 921 earthquake in 1999, the company has adopted seismic management measures that exceed regulatory standards. TSMC's seismic measures include deploying earthquake warning and shutdown systems, and building seismic resistance coefficients exceeding current regulations by 1.25 times.

However, there may still be aftershocks after this earthquake, and the impact of the earthquake on semiconductor manufacturing needs to be continuously observed. According to the Earthquake Prediction center of the Taiwan Meteorological Administration, there may be aftershocks of magnitude 6.5 to 7.0 in the next 3 to 4 days. This earthquake is the largest earthquake in 25 years since the 921 earthquake occurred.
