Beijing, March 11th (Xinhua) - The 2024 National People's Congress and Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference are being held in Beijing, and the "Deepening National Reading Activities" have been included in the government work report.

"This is the 11th time that national reading has been included in the government work report, indicating that the Party and the government attach great importance to the significance of national reading." Liu Ning, a member of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference and director of the Classical literature department of the Institute of Literature of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, told a reporter from China News Network.

Building a scholarly society, reading is an important topic. How to cultivate young people's interest in reading and how to transform physical bookstores are the focus of attention for some members of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference this year.

Encountering Reading: How Far Are We from the "Bookish Society"?

In recent years, reading promotion activities in China have been widely carried out, and the atmosphere of a bookish society has become increasingly strong.

The main results of the 20th National Reading survey show that in 2022, the comprehensive reading rate of various media for adult Chinese citizens will continue to grow steadily, and the increase in the exposure rate of digital reading methods is slightly higher than the reading rate of paper books.

Wang Huiren, a member of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference and editor in chief of Baihua Literature and Art Publishing House, told China News Network reporters that the deepening of the nationwide reading activities is of great significance for the improvement of citizen literacy and is conducive to the formation of an overall reading atmosphere.

In Wang Huiren's view, a reading oriented society cultivates a thinking oriented society, which is very beneficial for cultivating a creative society.

Li Yun, a member of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference and Secretary of the Party Committee and president of Shanghai newspaper Group, admitted to the media that with the progress of the times and the increasing spiritual and cultural needs of the people, there is still a certain gap between us and the vision goal of building a "bookish society".

As for the reasons, she believes that there are many aspects, such as the high-quality supply needs to be strengthened, and the effect of making full use of the Internet and digital technology to promote the full online and offline flowering of the National Reading Network is not significant enough, and so on.

Public Reading under the Impact of Short Videos: Is Physical Bookstores the Way Out?

Through years of teaching and research work, Liu Ning has found that reading for all is now facing many new challenges. "For example, video is very popular, but true deep reading often needs to be carried out on the basis of text reading."

Data picture: Citizens are purchasing books at the Wangfujing Book Fair in Beijing. Photo by Zhao Jun, journalist from China News Agency

"If teenagers are addicted to videos for a long time, their text reading ability may not be effectively cultivated and trained." Liu Ning said, especially the impact of the proliferation of short videos on teenagers should be fully valued.

A bookstore is an important scene where people and reading meet. Holding exhibitions and opening bookstores into parks... In recent years, many physical bookstores have been using books as a foundation, integrating innovation, and gathering various cultural elements to enrich the "bookstore+" business format and attract readers. However, they have also been criticized for "maintaining the true nature of bookstores.".

In addition, Wang Huiren believes that a major challenge of the nationwide reading activity is "difficulty in deepening". In recent years, although there have been strong national initiatives and various levels of government providing policies and improving related hardware construction, it is not enough to rely solely on the power of the government to truly carry out activities in depth.

The way to crack it: providing high-quality content and creating new cultural consumption scenes

From content to form, we need to continuously deepen the promotion of nationwide reading. We should not only pay attention to continuously providing high-quality reading content, forming an atmosphere of love for reading in the whole society, but also pay attention to improving the nationwide reading promotion service system.

Liu Ning believes that Chinese language class is an important occasion for learning reading and writing. In Chinese language teaching, it is important not to excessively use PPT and video teaching methods, and to take notes appropriately, which is an important way to form reading and writing training.

She also mentioned that parents should use the good habit of loving reading to infect their children and encourage them to participate in some reading interest groups, where members discuss and exchange ideas with each other, in order to stimulate their reading interest.

Li Yun suggested guiding physical bookstores to transform, upgrade, integrate and innovate, explore the construction of urban cultural reception halls, and make bookstores a new cultural consumption scene and platform that integrates functions such as public reading, cultural exhibitions, academic research, and theme education.

In addition, Qiu Huadong, a member of the Standing Committee of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference and Vice Chairman and Secretary of the Secretariat of the Chinese Writers' Association, suggested improving the urban management system, extending the cultural industry chain of newspapers and magazines, promoting better functioning of newspaper booths, nurturing the cultural atmosphere and humanistic background of cities, further improving the modern public cultural service system, deepening the promotion of reading for the whole population, and building a bookish society.
