Zuzana Ruziekova suffered in three concentration camps in World War Ⅱ, but not only did she survive, she also became one of the world’s leading harpaichordislR
Born in Czechoslovakia on 14 January 1927 to u Jewish family, she had a happy childhood ex¬cept sufering from tuberculosis. One day, as a rewanl for getting better from her illness, she asked her parents for a piano and piano lessons. Doctors ordered h«*r to rest, but she insisted and achieved her objective. Her teacher was so impressed that she encouraged her to go to France lo study with the world’s top harpsichordist .
In 1939, though, the Nazis occupied Czechoslovakia. Not only was she unable to study in France , but three years later she and her family were driven to the Terezin labour camp. Her grand¬parents and her father laler died in the camp. She can still remember how terribly frightened she was. when her camp number in Auschwitz had faded. In 1945, she became a forced labourer in Hamburg.
Then she was sent to the Bergen-Belsen camp, where in yet another misfortune she was affected with bubonic plague (黑死病).
When she finally returned to Czecho-slovakia with her seriously sick mother her hands were in an awful state, dumaged from working in the fields and carrying bricks. She was advised to abandon any ambition for a musical career. But, she refused and practiced the piano for 12 hours a day to make up for lost lime. In spite of great difficulties, she went on to struggle for a dislinguished careen as a harp- sichondist.
Her international breakthrough came in 1956 when she won the AHD International Music Compe- tition in Munich. Since that time she has performed regularly throughout Europe and has made repeat- ed visits to Japan and the United Stairs. Between 1 965 and 1975 she also became the first person to record Bach’s complete works for keyboard. To mark her 90th birthday next month. her complete Bach recordings have been re-issued . A new documentary about her will also be
released.
